Epictetus (c. 50 – c. 135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher. Born into slavery and later freed, he studied stoicism under Gaius Musonius Rufus and lived in Rome until the emperor Domitian banished all philosophers from the city. He then went to Nicopolis in northwestern Greece where he stayed until his death. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian.
