Travel Diary #2: Self drive road trip Namibie-Botswana 7380

The second leg of our journey is a self-drive road trip starting from Windhoek in Namibia and ending in Maun, Botswana. For budget reasons, it was impossible to hire the services of a driver-guide for a month. Moreover, we love the adventure and freedom that this type of travel brings. We rented a 4x4 with a rooftop tent and a trunk filled with all the camping essentials: sleeping bags, dishes, propane, and even a small fridge. Upon our arrival in Windhoek, where we would only spend one night, it's striking how well-constructed and clean the city is. Paved sidewalks and no litter along the roads, unlike in Tanzania. However, there is much more begging. Here, it’s not about someone wanting to provide a service in exchange for some change, but rather an extremely insistent form of begging. The same was true in Swakopmund, on the western coast by the sea. In several towns with frequent tourist traffic, we encountered this dichotomy between cleanliness and begging. We then left civilization, heading north along the coast. We crossed the Skeleton National Park. I didn’t think a desert landscape could be so varied. Sand dunes, arid areas with some bushes, red earth sometimes tinged with purple, and occasionally the bed of a dried river with a bit of greenery and some antelopes surviving while waiting the next rainy season. Another striking aspect of this desert is the transition to the Atlantic Ocean. The shift from desert to ocean happens very abruptly, with waves crashing directly in the desert or, further north, on the few pebbles that serve as a boundary between water and land. The northern tip of the park is called Terrace Bay. The campsite where we stop is actually a very popular spot for fishermen from neighboring countries. We chatted with one of them who had come all the way from Cape Town (South Africa), having traveled 2000 km to get here with his 4x4. The next stop on our road trip is the famous Etosha National Park. It is very different from the parks we visited in Tanzania. The dirt roads are in better condition, and the park is more suited for a self-drive visit. The small waterholes (natural or artificial) attract many animals during the dry season and are well marked on the map. However, to see certain animals like cheetahs and lions resting in the shade of trees, it's best to signal other visitors to stop and exchange information. Even the guides, identifiable by their vehicles with pop-up roofs or completely open cars, are generous with advice. A simple wave will have them stop alongside you for a chat. The park is less varied in terms of landscapes compared to the Serengeti, for example, but the sight of the many species sharing the waterholes is magnificent. Once we crossed Etosha from west to east, we arrived in Rundu in northern Namibia, the second largest city after Windhoek. The owner of the campsite where we stopped told us that there is very little work, and thus most people living on the outskirts survive on what they find and trade. We went with him to see some houses in the village. They are simply areas of land marked out with wooden sticks and a few shelters, either made of metal or a wood/clay mix. For the end of the Namibian part of the road trip, we headed northeast along the Okavango River. We stopped at a fishing campsite. A little sunrise tour on the river allowed us to chat with the owner, who was very pleasant. He taught us a lot about poaching management and the damage it causes to the river's wildlife. There are almost no fish left. According to him, less than 10% of the aquatic wildlife in this river remains. After a little rest in a room at Popa Falls, we headed to Botswana and the Okavango Delta for the last two weeks of this part of our journey. Notably, the Namibia/Botswana border at this point is at the end of a long dirt road that crosses Bwabwata National Park. Before entering the Moremi Game Reserve on the east side of the delta, we spent a night at a campsite near Maun. This town is the equivalent of Arusha in Tanzania (see dedicated article). It’s the starting point for safaris. We stocked up on supplies: fuel, water, and food for the next five days. On the way to the southern entrance of the reserve, a few kilometers after leaving Maun, we realized that driving conditions would be a bit more challenging. The paved road ended, giving way to dirt and sand. We activated the 4x4 mode after just a few meters. Once in the park, conditions changed again. Unlike Etosha, there are no large, flat gravel roads. Thanks to the paper map and the maps.me app, we managed to explore the meanders at an average speed of 20 km/h for about five hours that day. This was followed by several similar days of intense driving that required sharp concentration and a keen sense of direction. The park is very wild, and the campsites are basic. We camped by the Khwai River in the north of the park. Arriving in the early afternoon for a slightly less intense driving day, we saw about twenty elephants drinking and crossing the river. We quickly lit a fire to signal our presence. What an experience! This road trip has been a crescendo of adventure. Our tourist experience in Botswana is relatively good, but not on par with the previous two countries. The cleanliness and quality of services (campsites and guesthouses) are much lower than in Namibia and Tanzania, with significantly higher prices. I don't want to minimize the beauty of the Okavango Delta; we saw stunning landscapes and all kinds of animals: kudu, zebras, elephants, giraffes, baboons, etc. Moreover, far from complaining, I feel privileged to be able to experience this adventure with my family. However, the prices are far too high. If I could do it again, I would spend a bit more time in Namibia and Tanzania for the same budget. A very beautiful leg of the journey comes to an end, but stay tuned for more adventures in a few weeks!

This methodology places the player at the forefront, empowering them to learn through trial and error while cultivating profound accountability for their progress. It’s a strategy particularly potent in the formative years of player development, where honing individual skills and grasping the game nuances are paramount. However, as players mature and progress from youth performance to adulthood performance, their learning needs other solutions to fill the gaps. Adult learners typically benefit from an andragogy approach, which emphasizes self-directed learning, practical application of skills, and learning driven by internal motivation. This aspect forces individualism, which is sometimes overlooked and makes the player think and react individually or embed their energy and individual investment into team performance. Many teams or national teams struggled with results, even though the players’ performance was acceptable or good. Players of these teams displayed high physical qualities, but less emotional intelligence, mental behavior, and self-awareness performed during the last two World Cups or other games locally or internationally. The challenge lies in bridging these two approaches - transitioning players from a player-centered pedagogical approach to an andragogy approach. This transition isn’t a simple switch but a gradual process that requires careful planning and execution. For example, youth soccer player development can miss enhancing emotional intelligence and mental preparation during the selection or development procedures because the selection of these players during the player identification process was less effective in helping players jump into the other levels. One key aspect of this bridging process is to help players (young or adult) become more aware of their surroundings on the field. It is an aspect that combines experience and science to help players grasp the momentum of what is going on, what they should learn, and even how to think to find a problem-solving solution to the situation. As the earlier discussion, some players may be physically adept but struggle with situational awareness. The andragogy approach is beneficial for adult learning, but when integration of team-centered is clear and precise. By encouraging self-directed learning, players can be guided to pay more attention to their surroundings, anticipate the actions of other players, and make more informed decisions during the game. This solution is helping those high-quality players who are already aware of these, but other quality players need to fill the gap to understand the andragogy and still believe in performing as part of the team. It’s important to note that this “bridge” is a one-size-fits-all solution when understood correctly. Each player is unique, and the transition from pedagogy to andragogy should be tailored to their individual needs, abilities, and learning styles. The ultimate goal is to develop players who are not only physically ready to play but also aware, understand, and value the importance of teamwork and situational awareness. From a young age, I've been captivated by writers who express complex ideas through books, articles, and blogs. This inspired my dream of becoming a writer myself. Initially, I used writing as therapy; whenever I felt overwhelmed or distressed, I would write, knowing the paper wouldn't judge my feelings like humans might. As I advanced in my education, enrolling in a PhD program, I honed my academic writing skills. However, the advent of generative AI models like ChatGPT marked a turning point. These tools could replicate much of what I considered unique in my writing, leading me to wonder if we are losing the art of writing. With the rise of platforms like Medium and LinkedIn, blogging has become accessible to everyone, which is wonderful. However, it raises questions about authenticity. Can we truly know if the content was crafted by the person, or was it generated by AI? It's a distressing reality. Previously, securing freelance writing or blogging jobs was straightforward, but it has become challenging to discern whether someone is genuinely a writer or merely claiming to be one. This ambiguity has narrowed opportunities for passionate young writers like myself, who wish to pursue their passion and earn a living. I believe that the ancient wisdom of writing is being eroded by AI. However, this won't deter us from reading or writing. Human writing resonates with emotions, which AI-generated text often lacks, typically relying on repetitive phrases like "embark," "journey," "unleash," and "dive into." While everyone is free to use tools as they see fit, if AI constitutes more than 50% of your writing, then those aren't truly your words or expressions; they belong to the machine. I personally use AI for my research, correcting grammatical mistakes, and sometimes for checking paraphrasing suggestions. However, once I began generating AI text, I started feeling that it wasn't truly mine. It felt more robotic than human, lacking any real emotion.  I truly believe that generative AI will never be able to reach the beauty and complexity of the human mind. Everyone around her knew that her life was going to be shorter and shorter and that it was only a matter of time before she left them forever. The mother was the only one who didn't know it and who had the hope of an almost certain recovery. At the first diagnosis, the doctors thought they could work some miracle. He was happy about it, convinced that a surgical intervention, the work of a great specialist, would restart the machine. It was just an optical illusion one would say. To his great dismay, the same afternoon, he was told that the operation was not possible. It was too late. The disease had spread like a constellation of hundreds of stars. Poor mother's entire body was riddled with small, seemingly quiet particles, so dangerous, so uncontrollable. No medicine could dislodge them from this body so pale, so frail. Total impotence. With his sisters Aoula and Tania present with him at the mother's bedside, they decided not to say anything to either the mother or the 80-age father who naively trusted them a lot and believed everything they told him as a version of things. Perhaps he was also pretending so as not to contradict them. He had to be taken care of too, they thought. On the contrary, they told him that the doctors had seen that it was not necessary to operate on his wife of half a century or more and that with light radiotherapy and appropriate medication, everything would return to normal. Today he still remembers the big smile of relief from his mother who told those who visited her, with a beaming face, that thank God she was going to make it through without surgery. God certainly forgives lying for a good cause. Hazard doing things well, sometimes, this period coincided exactly with the end that he had decided for his long and trying career. He had thought about it for a long time and had resigned himself to a break that he intended to be definitive. This made him available to stand by the mother he loved so much. I would like to extend my warmest thanks to the many people who have responded to my previous articles on the issue of language in Morocco. Opinions continue to differ on the use of the Moroccan mother tongue in education. Some, without the slightest argument, oppose it with immeasurable fervour. False debate, say others. In fact, almost all teachers already use Darija to explain the content of their lessons, particularly in science subjects. So much the better. What is perplexing, however, is the logic of opposition that some people are striving to impose between Arabic and Darija. In fact, scientifically, what is required in teaching, particularly in the early years, what is recommended by all the international bodies concerned, what is concluded by almost all the scientific research on the subject, is a linguistic continuum, in the complementarity between the language used at home and the other languages, Arabic first and foremost in the case of Morocco, since politically we have made it the language of the country. Darija and Arabic complement each other perfectly. The advantage of learning in the mother tongue during the first years of schooling is precisely that it allows a transfer to other languages without fractures or breaks, ensuring normal mental structuring. The child is not shocked and develops psychologically, normally, in the continuity of its linguistic, genetic, historical, civilisational and social baggage. Logically, as has proved to be the case in countries that have long opted for the use of the mother tongue in education, the salutary effect of this approach is that learners assimilate knowledge easily and confidently, adopt social values without difficulty and integrate civic values more easily. The school is here a component of life, perfectly integrated into its environment. Unfortunately, doing things the way we've been doing them up to now is the exact opposite of this logic. Our way of doing things encourages a split personality, to put it mildly. As soon as a child starts school, he will adopt a behaviour for school, a behaviour for his family and later another behaviour for the street and everyday life. They will develop a language for each of these spheres. This is conducive to many mental abnormalities and is the main cause of school drop-out rates, which in Morocco are reaching rather worrying figures, not to mention the colossal budgets spent for little return. Africa dominated the 45th world cross-country championships held in Beograd on 30 March 2024. Croatia, was due to host the event but was finally replaced by Beograd on a decsion of World Athletics, because the preparations were not carried out properly. The events took place along the Danube in the Friendship Park. A splendid venue. When we talk about Africa, we are really talking about Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and, to a lesser extent, Morocco and South Africa. Of all the medals at stake, only one escaped the Africans, and that was in the mixed relay, where Great Britain & Northen Ireland managed the feat of taking a bronze medal from the Africans. In the junior women's 8km, it was the young unknown Ethiopian Marta Alemayo who won the race, four seconds ahead of her compatriot Asayech Ayichew and some ten seconds ahead of her other compatriot Robe Dida. Right from the start, the Ethiopians showed that they were there to win, and at no point did they let the Kenyan a chance to take the initiative. In the team ranking, Ethiopia naturally took the gold with 12 points, followed by Kenya 28 points and Uganda 48. On the evening of 22nd March, the athletics events of the 13th edition of the All Africa Games came to an end in the same atmosphere and with the same enthusiasm of an overjoyed public, especially for the two victories of Ghana. A historic moment for Ghana and African athletics. 51 of the 54 member countries and no fewer than 625 athletes took part in this edition, which was characterized by the quality of the organization, the high level of the track and equipment and, of course, the excellent preparation of the athletes, who set numerous records of the Games, national records and many of the World Lead performances, including that of Zambia in the men's 4x400m, which brought the competitions to a climax in this Final day of athletics at All-African Games. Indeed, it saw Zambia clocking 2:59.12 a National and Games record with great anchor of Muzala Samokunga ahead of Botswana 2:59.32. On the women side Nigeria clocked 3:27.29 in the same event. The cheers were a little lively when it came to the athletes from Ghana, but the public knew how to appreciate the performance and did not fail to encourage the athletes of other nationalities as well. In the afternoon of the third athletics days, the Nigerian Olympic and multiple World medallist Ese Brume won the high-quality but windy long jump at this 13th All-Africa Games leaping to 6m92 with a registered of +3.9. Marthe Koala of Burkina Faso finished second with 6m81 w (3.3), also 6m68 with a wind of only 2.0, ahead of other Nigerians Prestina Ochonogor 6m67w (3.2) and Ruth Osoro 6m62w (2.4) / 661 (1.9). Morocco’s young new comer Saad Hinti improved the national 400m hurdles record with 48.82 to win over Victor Ntweng of Botswana: 49.38. The fantastic crowd, who spared no effort to encourage the athletes, and the perfect organisation by officials from the Ghana Athletics Federation, assisted by delegates from the Confederation of African Athletics, certainly played a decisive role in the success of this third day of athletics events. The weather was also kind, the heat dropped a little and the humidity level was more bearable. World record holders not only won their events but also achieved World leading marks. Beatrice Chepkoech in steeple chase with 9:15.61 established a new World List ahead of Olympic winner Peruth Chemutai from Uganda 9:16.07 and Ethiopian Lomi Muleta 9:26.63. Nigerian Tobi Amusan clocked also a World List in 100 m hurdles with 12.89 despite a -2.1wind and she also was part of winning Nigerian 4x100 m with 43.05. More World leads in 400 m by Mary Moraa 50.57 over Esther Joseph from Nigeria 51.61 and Sita Sibiri 51.74, a new National Record for Burkina Faso.
